Description
The Celestial Collection Flare Bowls
The second release in the Celestial Collection, designed and created by Adrian Smith; Blacksmith at Coach House Forge.
Inspired by the nature and movement of particles; where the centre of the bowl is black and this energy is dispersed to the outer edge, one can view the movement toward or away from the centre. Adrian took the sheet metal, heating it multiple times to a very high heat, and then used hide hammer and peen hammers to create different textures, finishes, and tones within the same piece. The results are a tactile bowl with a deep, darkened and smooth centre with a contrasting dotted rim that flares out confidently surrounding the bowl.
There are 6 pieces in this release, which can be used as an objet d’art or a functional statement piece, in which you can display items, or use as a bowl for keeping your everyday treasures safe.
Notable points about No 1 bowl
- 8” Decagon (#1): This piece is a couple of millimetres shorter than its counterpart in this Celestial collection release, and has a slightly lower dominant tone when tapping the metal to life. The centre bowl is smooth with energetic ghosts of heat bursts from the forging process, these fingerprints carry the eye mesmerically around the piece while the flared rim awakens the senses with irregular, circular, and tactile patternation against the angular octagonal edge.
- Weighing 750 g, 1.5 lbs, this flare bowl sits at around 35 mm, 1.25” high. The outer diameter is 215 mm, 8.5”, and the inner bowl is 145 mm, 5.75”.
Notable points about No 2 bowl
- 8” Decagon (#2): The taller twin (just about) of the 8” Celestial Flare bowls, with a higher voice too when the metal is excited by touch. The dark bowl in the centre has distinct patternation from the forging process, more prominent on one side. The flared rim that encases the dome of the bowl readily shows the polished metal underneath, leaving the footsteps of the hammer marks around the octagonal journey of the birth of this piece.
- Weighing 750 g, 1.5 lbs, this flare bowl sits at around 35 mm, 1.25” high. The outer diameter is 215 mm, 8.5”, and the inner bowl is 145 mm, 5.75”.
Notable points about No 3 bowl
- 9” Decagon The first of three bowls just under 24 cm (just over 9 inches) diameter at their widest points, with the smallest flared rim in this Celestial Collection release, this piece is totally singled-out. And being the third smallest doesn’t detract from its ample size with a bowl of 7.5 inches (190 mm). The centre is an even depth of dark metal and meets the smooth curve where the flared edge and it meet changes the energy of the piece with deeper burnt dots interspersed with flashes of polished silver metal concentrated energy spots carved into the ten sides. This piece has a multi-toned sound when interacted with; creating B & C notes.
- Weighing 1 kg, 2.2 lbs, this flare bowl sits at around 40 mm, 1.75” high. The outer diameter is 240 mm, 9.5”, and the inner bowl is 190 mm, 7.5”.
Notable points about No 4 bowl
- 9” Decagon The second of three bowls just under 24 cm (just over 9 inches) diameter at their widest points, this slightly shorter bowl with a wide flared rim of 5 m (2”) has a distinct pattern to the hammer marks that carries the energy and eyes swirling around the piece. The centre of the bowl hosts a rich dark and even smooth surface with subtle cracked of texture interrupting the depth. This sumptuous and delightful piece has a touch of the ‘animal print’ about it!
- Weighing 1 kg, 2.2 lbs, this flare bowl sits at around 40 mm, 1.75” high. The outer diameter is 240 mm, 9.5”, and the inner bowl is 190 mm, 7.5”.
Notable points about No 5 bowl
- 9” Decagon (#2) The second of two bowls just under 24 cms ((just over 9 inches) diameter. This one sits confidently a touch taller than its sibling. A deeper, more mysterious flare with a swirl of dominant and dark hammer patterns elevating the bowl’s centre that has a smooth hammered and subtle ‘crackle’ to the surface of the matte black centre.
- Weighing 1 kg, 2.2 lbs, this flare bowl sits at around 45 mm, 1.7” high. The outer diameter is 235 mm, 9.25”, and the inner bowl is 145 mm, 5.75”.
Notable points about No 6 bowl
- 11” Decagon with substantial surrounding flare framing a ‘characterised’ bowl surface, smooth metal finish with continuous patterns of heat in the metal that rise up to the smooth curve of the flared rim; irregular with dark marks in the contrasting silver brightly polished metal edge. This piece plays a lovely dual note of high and low tone F# and Bb tones when brought to life with a gentle tap.
- Weighing 1.3 kg, 2.8 lbs, this flare bowl sits at around 40 mm, 1.57” high. The outer diameter is 280 mm, 11”, and the inner bowl is 190 mm, 7.5”.
